NCLEX exam processes

The NCLEX is a computer-based test that predominantly consists of multiple-choice questions with four options. However, examinees might also encounter short-answer and fill-in-the-blank questions. The exam is adaptive, concluding when the test-taker has either answered 75 questions correctly or 75 incorrectly, or when all questions have been addressed or the allotted time has elapsed. The scoring is based on a pass/fail system.
Prior to attempting the NCLEX, every candidate must obtain authorization to test (ATT). This involves a two-step procedure wherein candidates need to apply for licensure with the Nursing Regulatory Body (NRB) and also register and submit a test fee via Pearson VUE, which amounts to $200. Upon receiving authorization, candidates can proceed to schedule their NCLEX exam. The exam is available throughout the year and must be taken at a Pearson test center. Specific registration rules and requirements vary by state.

NCLEX Topics and Content

Differing from nursing school exams, the NCLEX places emphasis on critical thinking skills and clinical readiness, prioritizing these over the mere memorization of facts. Numerous NCLEX topics revolve around ensuring patient safety. The RN exam questions compel test-takers to envision real-life scenarios, showcasing their proficiency within the RN scope of practice. Conversely, NCLEX-PN questions concentrate more on collaboration with RNs and other members of the care team. There are four main content areas that make up the NCLEX:

  • Safe & Effective Care Environment - This entails proficiently overseeing patient care, skillfully prioritizing and delegating RN assignments, and adhering to safety protocols and infection control guidelines.
  • Health Promotion and Maintenance - This NCLEX subject bears the closest resemblance to the Health Assessment course required for nursing students. It centers on patient assessment, developmental stages, disease prevention, and the identification of risk factors.
  • Psychosocial Integrity - This subject pertains to elements of nursing care impacting the psychological or social needs of a patient. These encompass issues such as abuse, addiction, cultural practices, family-related matters, end-of-life care, and addressing trauma, among various other mental and emotional concerns that an RN should attend to.
  • Physiological Integrity - Registered Nurses (RNs) are responsible for attending to the fundamental needs of their patients. These encompass tasks such as maintaining hygiene, ensuring comfort, administering pharmacological therapy, mitigating risks and preventing injuries, and addressing the patient's evolving physiological requirements, such as fluid imbalances.
